ABOUT GREAT WOOD
In 1943 a few scouts pitched their tents above the farm in Adscombe. Their leader John Inchley was so impressed by the delightful grassy combe set within the impressive forest that he persuaded Scripture Union, with which he was associated, to take up a lease on the field and to establish a standing camp for young people. Great Wood Camp was thus put on the map in 1946.

In succeeding years Great Wood has gradually become more sophisticated. The original ex-army huts have been replaced by purpose built log cabins and water (once carried by the bucketful from the stream) is now largely mains.

Great Wood accommodates up to 78 people in various cabins. Six of these consist of fully serviced units of eight campers (in bunks) and an en suite leaders room sleeping two. Additionally the bunk area of these cabins can be divided into two separate rooms. There are a further four leaders cabins, all fully serviced, sleeping a maximum of 18 people in nine twin rooms. The cabins have flush toilets, electricity, heating and showers. There is an outdoor swimming pool and a delightful open-air chapel formed in a clearing in the wooded area by the stream.

Visitors are expected to bring their own sleeping bag and pillowcase.

The JI Hut is a large multi-purpose room available for games, craft activities, worship, general socialising and meeting.

The JI Hut also has a separate comfortable meeting room available for leaders.

The open air swimming pool is a wonderful resource at Great Wood. It can be used for just swimming or more adventerous activities such as scuba diving (see the Space website).
